Gardai are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man found earlier today.

The body of the man, believed to aged in his 40s, was discovered outside Ballinhassig in County Cork this afternoon. 

Emergency services were called but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has been taken to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

There is no indication yet of foul play but Gardai are keeping an open mind. 

"We are awaiting full details in relation to it but we do not believe its suspicious", a Gardai spokesperson said. 

The spokesperson said they are awaiting the results of the post-mortem and will proceed accordingly when they receive them. A toxicology test will also be conducted. 

They have cordoned off the scene pending the completion of the tests. 

A theory being pursued is that the man may have fallen on his way home. He was discovered just 125 metres from his home, where he is believed to have lived alone. 

It is unclear how long his body lay in the spot it was found. 

Gardai said they are withholding the man's name until they can notify the family of the deceased.
