Gardai investigate claims patient was raped by medic in Irish hospital
GARDAI ARE investigating a shocking allegation that a female patient was raped in a hospital changing room by a medic.
The Sunday World has learned the woman – who is in her 60s – attended the private Bon Secours Hospital in Tralee, Co. Kerry, by appointment last weekend to undergo a medical procedure.
She is understood to have been dropped to the appointment by her partner, who waited to collect her in the vicinity of the hospital.
It is believed she had completed the appointment and was changing back into her clothes in a nearby dressing room when the medic is alleged to have entered the room and raped her.
Sources say the medic in question has not been arrested but is denying the allegations.
A source confirmed to the Sunday World: “The woman made an initial complaint within hours of the alleged rape. She was taken to Cork University Hospital where she underwent a specialist medical examination later in the evening.
DNA samples were taken by medical staff as part of the examination.
A source said: “She met with Gardaí later in the week, at which stage she made a formal statement.”
Specialist Gardaí in Tralee are understood to have visited the hospital over the course of the week in a bid to collect all relevant CCTV footage.
The area where the alleged rape is claimed to have occurred was sealed off and a full forensic examination of the area took place. It’s understood there is no CCTV in the dressing room, but cameras are stationed in the areas around this location.
“This is the subject of a full Garda investigation,” a source confirmed.
The Bon Secours Group is one of the largest private healthcare providers in Ireland.
It has some of the most technologically-advanced hospitals in the country located in Cork, Dublin, Galway and Tralee and the Mount Desert Care Village, Cork.
The group provides full cover to health insurance companies such as VHI, Laya Healthcare and Aviva as well as providing a substantial service to the National Treatment Purchase Fund.
Gardaí have confirmed they are investigating the alleged rape, but refused to comment further for operational reasons.
A spokesperson for the Bon Secours Hospital in Tralee this week declined to comment.
