Gardai were attacked with bottles and bricks in Dublin city centre yesterday evening while chasing a van that had been reported stolen.

The incident unfolded at 8pm when gardai received a call that a van was being driven dangerously and at speed up and down Railway Street in the north inner city, not far from Connolly Station.

When a unit initially responded to the call it came under attack from what gardai said was a "large amount of glass bottles and bricks being thrown at them".

A man was seen getting out of the van and gardai gave chase on foot despite being under attack.

A man in his 30s was arrested and detained at Store Street garda station, before being released later to appear in court at a later date, according to the garda press office.

During the incident a large number of gardai were called to the area to deal with the violence, including members of the armed response unit.

At one point five garda vehicles and more than a dozen gardai could be seen on the street.

The stolen van, which appeared to have its sliding side door ripped off, was also recovered.

There were no reports of injuries.
