Gardai arrest man and seize large quantity of cannabis

Gardai have seized a large quantity of cannabis after an operation in the midlands today.

According to gardai, a operation today involving the Revenue’s Customs Drugs Law Enforcement, the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and the Westmeath Divisional Drug Unit seized 6.5kgs of Cannabis Herb (subject to analysis) with an estimated street value of €130,000 in Mullingar.

In a follow-up operation a house and lands close to the town were searched and a 52-year-old man was arrested in connection with this investigation.

He is currently detained at Mullingar Garda Station under the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.

This operation follows a three-day Operation Thor operation by gardai in the Carlow/Kilkenny region.

In that sweep 19 premises were searched and gardai seized drugs with a total street value of  €14,500.

Drugs seized included Cannabis, Heroin and Cocaine (subject to analysis)

A quantity of cash, totalling €1,200, was also seized.
 
Gardai say that 42 people were arrested during the operation, 23 for crime offences and 19 on warrants.

According to gardai these offences include breaches of theft, burglary, forgery, firearms offences and the Misuse of Drugs Act.
 
So far 15 people have been charged and will appear before sittings of Carlow District Court in the coming days.
