Neighbours helped to restrain an armed man at the scene of a fatal stabbing in Cork this morning.

A woman died in the incident and her partner suffered multiple stab injuries after both were brutally attacked in their home.

The young man is now in Garda custody after the tragedy which unfolded at Murmont Avenue in Montenotte, Cork.

Neighbours raised the alarm shortly after 7.30am this morning when they went to the assistance of the distressed house occupants.

The 60 year old woman had suffered multiple stab wounds and, despite desperate attempts by paramedics to stabilise her condition, she was pronounced dead before she could be transferred to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

Her husband was rushed to the Mercy University Hospital (MUH) where he was treated for serious but non-life threatening injuries.

These are understood to be defensive in nature. The man was scheduled to undergo surgery.

A short time later a 25-year-old man was arrested by Gardai. He was taken to Mayfield Garda Station for questioning.

It is understood the young man is known to the elderly couple.

He can he held for an initial period of 12 hours but that can be extended by gardai.

The State Pathologist's Office has been notified and a full post mortem examination will be conducted at CUH.

Gardai are treating the death as suspicious and expect to launch a murder investigation. However, it may be some time before gardai are able to interview the man in his 60s about the sequence of events that led to the tragedy.

The semi-detached property in the quiet estate was sealed off by gardai pending a full forensic examination.

Gardai began door-to-door inquiries to determine the timeline of the events which unfolded from 7.30am this morning. The alarm was raised when an elderly man was seen running from the property being chased by a younger man armed with a knife.

One neighbour expressed his deep shock at the tragedy.

"This is such a quiet place. No-one can believe it, to be honest with you," he said.

The deceased, who has yet to be formally identified, was described by locals as lovely woman who was devoted to her family and community.

"I know she worked locally and every time you met her she had a smile for you," he added.

"The entire estate is shocked by this. You never think something like this will happen on your own doorstep."
