Gardai appeal for witnesses after cyclist dies in collision

A cyclist has died in a collision in west Cork.

The 18 year old man suffered fatal injuries in an accident on the N71 road at Barley Hill, on the Clonakilty to Skibereen Rd just west of Rosscarberry at 7.10pm.

The tragedy involved a collision between the bike and a passing car along a busy stretch of the main Cork to Bantry road.

Despite desperate efforts by paramedics to aid the young man at the scene, he had suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead before he could be transferred to Cork University Hospital (CUH).

He is understood to be from the west Cork area.

Gardaí closed the road and put diversions in place to allow for a detailed examination of the area by accident scene investigators.

Motorists are urged to avoid the area while the investigation is ongoing.

Gardai have also urged anyone who may witnessed the collision to contact them.

Weather conditions were described as cold but clear and are not thought to have been a factor in the tragedy.

The driver of the car, a man in his late 60s, was uninjured but was treated at the scene for shock.
