Gardai are appealing to the public for information regarding the violent robbery and assault of three people in north Dublin.

An American tourist in her 80s along with two of her travel companions were mugged and assaulted as they walked in Town Park near the castle in Swords.

The attack occurred at approximately 8.45pm as the three were taking pictures of Swords Castle.

They were approached by a group of youths who assaulted them before stealing a camera bag containing an inexpensive camera.

A man in his late 20s suffered a possible fractured shoulder while a woman, also in her late 20s, was struck a number of times in the incident. He was taken to Beaumont Hospital by ambulance.

The younger woman who was struck did not need hospital treatment while the woman in her 80s did not suffer any injuries in the incident.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses and a garda spokesperson said a large group of youths had congregated in the park at that time.

The spokesperson said they were hoping that someone passing through the park may have witnessed the assault, despite the bad weather at the time.

Witnesses or anyone who may have been in Town Park between 6pm and 8.45pm is asked to contact Swords Garda Station on 01 6664700, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
