Garda shut down street for protest that never took place
Gardai shut down Kildare Street yesterday and positioned horse mounted officers outside Leinster House in anticipation of an Irish Water protest which never took place.
More than 40 gardai were left standing around and motorists were forced away from the area as a precaution after last week’s violent scuffles outside the Dail which left on female garda unconscious.
Gardaí refused to comment on the origin of the information that led them to mount the major security plan yesterday.
Anti Austerity Alliance Dublin city councillor Michael O'Brien, who was involved in organising last week's Dáil demonstrations, said that he had not been involved in arranging any protests for this week.
"The next one I am aware of happening outside the Oireachtas is taking place next week," said the councillor.
"The nature of social media is such that people can make an ad-hoc announcement," he pointed out.
