Garda probe after man asks young girls to get into his car with sweets offer
Gardai are investigating an incident in which a man asked two young girls to get into his car and offered to buy them sweets.
The incident happened on a country road outside the village of Drumkeen in Co Donegal.
The girls, aged five and seven years old, were approached on Friday last at 6.15pm.
The girls' grandmother, who was nearby, heard what the man said and shouted at him to leave them alone. The man quickly drove away from the scene.
A garda spokesman said today that the incident was being investigated as "a suspicious approach."
Gardai want to interview the man who was said to be driving a VW Transporter-type van. He was described as aged in his 60s and clean-shaven.
Local councillor Liam Doherty told the Herald that local people were remaining vigilant since the incident.
"People were shocked to hear what happened and are certainly more vigilant since it happened.
"Whoever it was should come forward to the gardai. Local people are very wary and are on the lookout," he said
