Garda and civilian killed in shooting incident
A garda and a civilian have been shot dead in an incident in North County Louth this evening
Garda Representative Association President Dermot O’Brien has said, “This dreadful, dreadful news is the deepest fear of every police family. This puts everything we do into perspective.
“At this time of distress, the garda family will be doing everything possible to support the late garda’s relatives and loved ones, friends and colleagues.”
Gardai have now confirmed that two men, including a serving member of the force, have died tonight in a shooting incident.
We have learned that the Garda was a married man with children.
A third person, a woman, has been seriously injured in the same incident.
Niall Collins, justice spokesman for Fianna Fail, said he was shocked to hear a garda had been killed.
"Obviously details of this incident are still emerging but I am extremely shocked to hear that a member of An Garda Siochana has been killed tonight. Other lives have also been lost in this very sad incident," he said.
Mr Collins offered condolences to family and colleagues and Garda Commissioner Noirin O'Sullivan.
It's believed the incident occurred on the Cooley Peninusula near Omeath, Co Louth.
It's understood the garda was attending a domestic incident.
It's also believed a crime scene has been sealed off in Newry, Co Armagh, by the PSNI.
Two civilians have also been reported as injured in the same incident.
It's understood the shooting occurred at approximately 6.30pm.
It's believed the incident occurred in Omeath, Co Louth.
Emergency services are attending the scene.
