Garda Commissioner’s husband promoted

Jim McGowan, the husband of Garda Commissioner Nóirin O’Sullican, has been promoted to the rank of Chief Superintendent.

Reports indicate that he is one of 19 gardai to be promoted to the rank.

In February Mr McGowan was appointed to be the ‘central coordinator’ for the investigation teams looking into the gangland murders of David Byrne, who was killed in the Regency Hotel attack and Eddie Hutch snr, who was gunned down days later.

Three men have been murdered because of the Kinahan – Hutch feud since February.

Det McGowan was the lead garda on Operation Mizen, the special unit set up to monitor water charge protests and he is also pursuing criminal investigations against various members of the force for allegedly leaking information to journalists.

Last July Commissioner O’Sullivan was forced to defend the appointment of her husband to team investigating the leaks.
