Garda Commissioner appoints her husband to investigate information leaks
The Garda Commissioner Nóirín O'Sullivan has defended her decision to appoint her husband Detective Superintendent Jim McGowan to a team tasked with investigating alleged leaks of information to journalists.
"I think it is a matter of public record that my husband is a Detective Superintendent in An Garda Síochána” the Commissioner said.
"Any roles he carries out in An Garda Síochána is in that capacity."
However the move has been criticised by TD Catherine Murphy.
It's questionable to be appointing someone as close as that. That is not going to add to her credentials".
While speaking at a Garda graduation ceremony in Templemore, Commissioner O'Sullivan denied that any journalists’ phones had been tapped.
"The relationship between the Garda Síochána and the media is very important . . . We very much respect the role of journalists and the role of the media in making sure that the public interest is best served."
