The stunning, and scary, images are from the Shannon Basin as residents prepare for thepossibility that flood waters will rise even further over the next 48 hours.

With more heavy rain forecast for the entire country over the next 48 hours there are worries things will continue to get worse but levels stabilised today, raising hopes that the worst may be over.

Those hopes were further boosted by the news that the ESB will not release extra water from the Parteen Weir, a move which would have put extra pressure on all points in the Shannon basin.

The ESB will review that decision again on Saturday morning.
