An elderly church goer was shocked to find a document supporting terror group ISIS inside her church leaflet at mass.

The Westmeath Independent reports that the woman, who did not want to be identified, attended mass on Monday morning at St Peter and St Paul Church in the centre of the town.

As she left the service she picked up the weekend newsletter only to find that neatly folded inside was a flyer supporting the brutal Islamic terror group.

The woman's daughter contacted the paper to express her disgust and horror at the leaflet, which had the first line "we allow the rape of women".

The woman also plans to alert gardai to the leaflet and she raised concerns that Athlone may now be a target for the extremists.

"When you think of the people in Westlodge (Larry and Martina Hayes who were killed in the terrorist attack in Tunisia last year) who's to say Athlone was not put on the map that time," she said.

Parish priest Canon Liam Devine called the incident "serious" and "frightening".
