A two car collision in Roscommon has resulted in five people, including two children aged two and 6, being taken to hospital.

The collision on the Brideswell to Athlone Road, one mile outside Brideswell, on the R363 occurred at approximately 4am between two cars.

The sole occupant of one car, a 23-year-old man, was seriously injured in the collision and has been taken to Tullamore Hospital.

There were two adults and two children, aged two and six, in the second car and all four were taken to Portiuncla Hospital, Ballinasloe for treatment.

Their medical condition is unknown at this stage.

The road is closed to facilitate a Forensic Collision examination and the road will remain closed until lunchtime.

There are local diversions in place.
