Five people have been injured in a crash between a bus carrying passengers with special needs and a car this afternoon in Dublin.

Emergency services rushed to the scene near Whitehall Church on Dublin's northside shortly after 3pm.

The five injured people have been taken to Beaumont and the Mater hospitals in the city. It is understood one person sustained a spinal injury in the incident.

Four fire engines and four ambulances attended the scene in a joint rescue operation between Dublin Fire Brigade and the HSE.

The incident has resulted in major traffic problems in the area.

Gardai warned drivers that delays are being experienced inbound into the city.
