Fishermen critical after being overcome with fumes in trawler

Two fishermen are in critical condition after they were overcome with fumes aboard the Galway-registered trawler Oilean an Oir.

One of the men, aged 27 is from Galway while the other man (46) is from the Philippines.

The incident occurred at 1:30pm today at Killybegs.

The two fishermen were rushed to Letterkenny General Hospital after they were rescued from the hold of the vessel.

Doctors are still battling to save the men.

The two were cleaning tanks in a refrigeration unit when the Galway man fell into the hold and the Filipino was overcome with fumes as he tried to rescue him.

The scene has been preserved by gardai and officials from the Health and Safety Authority are due to arrive this evening.
