An asteroid entering the atmosphere has been spotted in Northern Ireland.

Known as a 'fireball', the phenomenon is relatively rare.

However a driver in Scotland with a dashboard camera managed to record the asteroid lighting up the sky.

Mark Bailey, director at Armagh Observatory, said reports from the public made it possible for astronomers to work out the trajectory of the fireball.

He said: "It's very interesting to see what people do report.

"It's mostly people who have never seen such a bright object in the sky."

He also said that the fireball was visible in Scotland, Longford and Letterkenny as well as in Northern Ireland.
