Thousands of homes across south Dublin are without power this morning following a fire at an ESB substation.

Three units of the Dublin Fire Brigade responded to the alarm which was raised at approximately 5.30am this morning

ESB have said that the "large fault" at the Leopardstown substation affects power to the areas of Mount Merrion, Blackrock, Stillorgan, Foxrock, Leopardstown and Booterstown.

Crews from the network are currently working to restore the fault on Brewery Road that has caused the substantial outage.

About half the affected homes have had power restored with the rest projected to be fixed by mid morning.

Other parts of the country are also without electricity.

In Limerick, 130 houses in the Abbeyfeale area are without power and it is expected to be restored by 2pm.

The ESB are also reporting a major fault in Donegal, around the Letterkenny and Milford areas.
