A fire has broken out at a well-known luxury spa and resort hotel this morning.

The blaze broke out shortly before 9.30am at the Galgorm Resort and Spa hotel, located on the outskirts of Ballymena. Six fire service units carrying 47 firefighters responded to the call out at 9.24am to extinguish the fire.

A spokesperson for the hotel tweeted to say the staff and guests were back in the hotel.

An electrical fire - which originated in a roof space of a main auditorium - has been blamed for starting the fire.

There have been no reports of any injuries as yet.

Galgorm Hotel, which is popular for weddings, first opened its doors in 1998 and now has 122 guest rooms.

Alan O'Neill, Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service group commander, said crews would remain at the scene for some time.

"We had six fire fighting appliances, an aerial appliance and a command vehicle - in total we had 47 people there.

"We will remain there for the next number of hours.

"We are working with the hotel to get them back up and running as normal."
