A young cyclist is fighting for her life following a horrific accident while cycling in the Sally Gap, Co Wicklow.

It's understood that the 20-year-old woman was put into an induced coma after suffering serious head injuries in the accident on Sunday morning.

A garda spokesman said that the woman was seriously injured when she fell off her bike as she was descending the steep mountain road at around 10.20am on Sunday.

She was cycling towards the village of Laragh, Co Wicklow, near the popular beauty spot at Glendalough when she crashed near the Lead Mines car park.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and she was airlifted by the Dublin Coast Guard helicopter to Beaumont Hospital.

Denis Gleeson, president of the Orwell Wheelers cycling club, which is the largest in the Dublin area, said he was shocked to hear of the accident.

"It's bad news. I do really hope she's OK," he told the Herald. "We all love the sport but we advise people that any road is dangerous and cycling is dangerous."
