Father and daughter's miracle escape as car ploughs into them and flees
A father and daughter had a miracle escape when they were knocked down by a 4x4-type vehicle as they walked near their home on Saturday evening.
Brendan Lennon (59) and his daughter Cadi (23) were not far from their home in rural Co Carlow when the incident happened at 8.20pm.
Neighbours said Mr Lennon has suffered ill-health in the last year and was just getting over treatment for cancer.
The family live in the Rutland townland outside Carlow town where local roads have no footpaths and there are a few severe bends.
"Cars come around those bends very quickly sometimes. You could be swept away," said local man Bertie Hancock.
"Brendan is a lovely man, it's an awful thing that happened."
Gardaí have appealed for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
They said the pair were knocked down in the Urglin/ Rutland area by a 4x4 that failed to stop at the scene.
They said that Mr Lennon was seriously injured, while his daughter sustained minor injuries.
Their injuries are described as non-life threatening. It is understood Mr Lennon suffered bone fractures while Ms Lennon suffered bruising and soft tissue damage.
Both were taken by ambulance to St Luke's General Hospital in Kilkenny.
One neighbour said it was sad that a family was spending time in hospital on Father's Day.
"It's awful. I hope they catch whoever did it," said one local woman.
Neighbours said Mr Lennon had worked for the HSE in a local hospital, but had retired when his health deteriorated.
His wife works as a special needs assistant in a local school.
Ms Lennon is studying in the Institute of Technology in Carlow.
The family are well respected and thought about in the area, and locals said they were shocked a driver could leave the scene of a crash.
"It happened in broad daylight. God knows how long it would have been before they were found if they were badly hurt," said one shocked local woman.
Locals have called for speed limits on the roads in the area, as well as better signage to indicate bends in the road.
Meanwhile, a pedestrian struck by a car in Galway over the weekend has died.
The 30-year-old man was walking at Bushy Park, Moycullen Road, when the crash occurred at about 1.40am on Saturday.
He was taken to University Hospital Galway, where he later died.
Garda investigators have examined the scene of the collision and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
