EuroMillions winner waits two months to collect €500,000 prize
The holder of a EuroMillions winning ticket waited two months to collect the cash, telling the National Lottery that taking his time allowed him to make important decisions.
The €500,000 was won in the EuroMillions Plus draw of April 25 but the winner didn't even know he had won until he returned to the Applegreen N3 Cavan Service Station a few days after the draw.
“A couple of days after the draw, I was back in the shop and the place was full of posters and balloons to celebrate the big win. Straight away, I thought to myself that there’s a big chance this fuss is all for me. Once I checked my ticket on the phone app, it felt as if my life would be changed forever,” he said.
But rather than head straight to Abbey Street with the ticket, as most of us would have done, the Cavan native took his time to decide coolly what he wanted to do with his windfall.
“Despite being constantly paranoid about keeping this half a million euro lottery ticket safe, taking the time out before I claimed has been a real blessing for me. Instead of rushing out and celebrating the win like a mad man, I have made some modest life choices which will make my future more comfortable for many years to come. I have also done a lot of research on charities which are close to my heart so I will be able to give back to those in the local community who need it most,” he added.
You have to admire the man's restraint and clear-head at a time when most of us would go a little nuts.
