Elderly man killed in one-car collision

A man in his 80s died this afternoon after his car collided with a tree in Co Galway.

Gardai in Loughrea are investigating a single-vehicle fatal road traffic collision that occurred at Ballydoogan, Co Galway, on the N65 Loughrea to Portumna Road at around 4.10pm this afternoon.

A male in his 80s was fatally injured when the car he was driving left the road and collided with a tree.

The man was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body has been taken to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe.

The stretch of road (N65, just past the junction with the R446 Loughrea to Ballinasloe road) is currently closed pending the completion of an examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators. Local diversions are in place.
