Update on the Eircom mass outage - company says services back working
Eircom says that all of its phone services are back working again after today’s mass outage. But the company won’t know for sure whether they have fixed the problem until tomorrow.
“We have stabilised the system this evening and all services are currently restored,” a spokesman told Independent.ie.
“We’ll be conducting tests later this evening and through the night to make sure everything remains working tomorrow morning.”
Today’s phone outage affected 5pc of all Eircom network traffic and began around 10am. However, the outage affected a disproportionately large percentage of voice traffic to and from phones.
This is because voice traffic is a smaller part of Eircom’s network than broadband or data traffic, so 5 per cent of the company’s overall network traffic becomes a much higher percentage when measured as in relation to its voice traffic.
Types of calls affected, said the Eircom spokesman, were those to or from business accounts of one type or another. This included services such as utility companies, including Electric Ireland and Bord Gais. It also affected transportation companies and media companies.
“If you were trying to reach a call centre that was on our network, you may have not been able to get through,” said the Eircom spokesman. “However, it wasn’t a total outage, but an intermittent one.”
Some mobile phone traffic on Eircom’s eMobile service was also affected, the spokesman said.
Some emergency services may have been affected, with the Dublin Fire Brigade reporting problems.
The spokesman said that the company is still trying to identify the root cause of the outage and hopes to do so tonight in a series of “stress tests”.
