Tributes were made last night to 12-year-old Craig Williams after the Dublin youngster died four days after an incident at a hotel swimming pool in Spain.

The Balbriggan native got into difficulty while swimming in the pool at the Guitart Central Park Resort and Spa in Lloret De Mar near Barcelona on Thursday and he tragically passed away in a hospital in the Spanish city on Monday.

It is understood the incident happened on Thursday afternoon and Craig was taken from the pool by lifeguards before being airlifted to hospital.

Guitart Hotels, which owns the hotel where the incident took place, released a two-page written chronology yesterday detailing the events surrounding the tragedy.

The statement said: “The Irish family of the child checked into the Guitart Central Park Hotel in Lloret de Mar on August 17.

“The family had reserved three hotel rooms in which the 12-year-old was staying with six of his relatives, his mum, sister, aunt and cousins.

“The second day of their stay at the hotel, between 3pm and 3.45pm, an incident occurred in the upper pool involving the child.

“According to statements made to local police by witnesses who were there when it happened, a cousin of the child, two French men and an Englishman, the chronology of events were as follows:

‘The boy was swimming in the pool with his 14-year-old cousin when suddenly he started sinking under the water.

“Immediately the girl who was with him raised the alarm and asked people in the pool to help.”

The statement said the first people to help out were other tourists including two French lifeguards holidaying at the hotel, and two official lifeguards hired by a company with 16 years experience which had been working for the hotel chain for three years, then took over to try to revive the boy and call the emergency services.

Craig was a member of his local Cub Scout group and they paid tribute to him on Facebook saying: 'It is with a broken heart that we learned that our fantastic Cub Scout Craig Williams has passed away in a tragic accident whilst on holiday with his family. He was truly a great Cub and a pleasure to have with us as part of our group, a young gentleman! A scout that will stay in our hearts forever! We would like to extent our deepest sympathies to his family at this difficult times, May he rest in peace.'
