Drunk driver stumbled out of car when gardai stopped him
A DRIVER who drove the wrong way up a slip road off the M1 was so drunk he stumbled out of a car and nearly fell on the ground when gardai stopped him.
Vasile Istrati (25) was more than twice the legal drink-drive limit when he went the wrong way around a roundabout and drove on the wrong side of the road.
The front right tyre on his car was flat.
Judge Dermot Dempsey fined Istrati €950 and banned him from driving for three years.
The defendant, of Hampton Wood, Balbriggan, admitted before Swords District Court to drunk-driving and careless driving at the junction of the Naul Road and the M1 on January 9 last.
Sgt Bob Kavanagh said gardai were on patrol when they saw Istrati, who is from Moldova, drive the wrong way up a southbound ramp on the M1.
He said Istrati then went the wrong way around a roundabout and drove on the wrong side of the Naul Road.
Sgt Kavanagh said Istrati was stopped by gardai and he stumbled out of the car, nearly falling at the feet of the officers.
Istrati later provided a breath specimen which showed a reading of 68mgs of alcohol per 100mls of breath.
Defence solicitor Fiona D’Arcy said the defendant was “heading home” after a party.
