A large number of dissident republicans were allowed march down Dublin's O'Connell Street today in a bid to hijack the 1916 commemorations.

Traffic was stopped and a large number of gardai were on hand as hundreds of dissidents decked out in paramilitary uniforms and sunglasses marched down from the Garden of Remembrance to the GPO.

A small crowd gathered to watch the marchers, many of whom had their faces covered.

The demonstration, organised by Republican Sinn Fein also featured marching bands and flags.

The march comes a day before the 100th anniversary of the start of the 1916 Rising, which began on Easter Monday of that year, April 24.
