A cyclist in his 70s has died after a collision with a car in Westmeath today.

The collision occurred at approximately 3.45pm this afternoon between a car and a cyclist.

The cyclist was fatally injured in a collision, which occurred on the N52, four miles north of Mullingar.

The cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

The body of the deceased was removed to Midlands Regional Hospital with a post mortem examination expected to take place tomorrow in Tullamore hospital.

The driver of the car, a female in her 70s, was uninjured.

The scene of the collision is being examined by Garda forensic collision investigators and the road will remain closed overnight.
