Wife of stabbed taxi driver is expecting baby today

The wife of a taxi driver who was stabbed repeatedly by passengers in a horrific attack at the weekend is expecting a baby today.

Vayalil Thomas Mathew, who is in his mid-30s and originally from India, was subjected to a vicious and unprovoked attack and had his taxi stolen in Swords, Co Dublin, in the early hours of Saturday.

Mr Mathew picked up two men outside a busy fast-food restaurant at the Airside Retail Park about 3am on Saturday.

He then drove the two men just a short distance to a roundabout near the Pavilion Shopping Centre where he was assaulted and stabbed a number of times.

"The two guys were friendly at first and even gave him a deposit of €50 to take them to Drogheda, but then when they were on the dual carriageway and Thomas asked them the address they were going to he got suspicious of their behaviour," a close friend of the driver told the Irish Independent.

"They got angry and started using bad language, and when he pulled over, the guy in the back held a knife to his throat and the man in the passenger seat started punching him."

Mr Mathew escaped from the car but the two men jumped out and stabbed him several times. "One of the wounds is 4 or 5cm deep and near his spleen," said his friend.

The two thugs then drove off in the taxi towards Balbriggan. The car was later found burnt out near Bellewstown, Co Meath. Mr Mathew was rushed to Beaumont Hospital by an ambulance but was later discharged.

"His wife is due to have their fourth baby today, it is a very difficult time for him right now with no car and the trauma of the attack," he said.
