Police have released CCTV footage showing the moment Andrew Mason was punched in the head by Maxwell Banbury in a Devon nightclub, for which he escaped a jail term.

The video shows how Banbury approached Mr Mason in the Fever nightclub, punched him, then casually finished his drink.

The attack left Mr Mason in a coma for 10 days with a fractured skull. He is still suffering neurological damage seven months after the attack.

Banbury, 19, of Chantry Avenue, Bideford, admitted causing grievous bodily harm and was jailed for 16 months, which was suspended for two years. He has also been ordered to do 200 hours' community service and pay £1,000 compensation.

DC Phil Lawes from Devon and Cornwall Police told the North Devon Journal: "This was a totally unprovoked assault with no justification whatsoever.

"The severity of this assault shockingly illustrates how a single punch can cause very serious injuries – and the consequences of this attack could have been much worse.

"Devon and Cornwall Police will investigate these types of assaults robustly and bring the offenders to justice."
