A large quantity of suspected heroin has been seized as part of an investigation targeting drug-dealing gangs in the midlands.

Heroin with an estimated street value of €300,000 was seized when gardaí stopped and searched a car in Crumlin in Dublin city on Friday afternoon.

A 35-yerar-old male was arrested at the scene and is being detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996 at Crumlin Garda Station.

The haul came during operations involving members of the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau and gardaí from the Westmeath Division.

During a follow-up search later that evening, heroin with an estimated value of €100,000 was seized at a house in the Killucan area of Co. Westmeath.

A 26-year-old female was arrested and is currently being detained at Mullingar Garda Station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996.

The investigation is ongoing.
