Two men have been arrested after suspected explosive devices were seized in Dublin's north-inner city.

The arrests occurred this evening in the Ballybough area of the capital.

Members of the elite Emergency Response Unit are on the scene and an Army Bomb Disposal unit has been requested.

The area has been sealed off.

It is believed that gardai discovered semtex during a search of a vehicle earlier today.

A garda statement read: "As part of an ongoing operation into dissident republican activity, gardai stopped and searched a vehicle on Spring Garden Street, Ballybough in the inner city at approximately 6pm this evening, where two men were arrested.

"The arrested men are being detained at Clontarf garda station under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences against the State Act, 1939 as amended.

"The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team are en route to the scene and roads are currently closed. Local diversions are in place. "
