Twisted rapist dies in Portlaoise Hospital
A CONVICTED sex offender who was so ill a full-time carer had to stay with him behind bars with the prison cell door left open, has died.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, passed away in Portlaoise General Hospital.
He was in custody awaiting sentence after being found guilty of serious sexual offences and was unable to care for himself.
The prisoner had been detained in the Midlands Prison, Co Laois, was partially sighted, an amputee and confined to a wheelchair, according to sources.
“It’s not an appropriate setting but a nursing home wouldn’t be fair to the victim,” a source told the Sunday World.
Confined to a wheelchair, the man was allowed to have his cell door open throughout the day and night to allow his carers access.
The Prison Service has previously had to go to great lengths to accommodate inmates with severe health issues or disabilities.
