Maximum security thugs feel the itch after scabies outbreak at Portlaoise prison

Some of Ireland’s most dangerous thugs are itching to get out of Portlaoise Prison’s C block after an outbreak of scabies at the jail.

Villains like Brian Meehan who murdered Veronica Guerin, gang killer Brian Rattigan and cash van robber Alan ‘Fatpuss’ Bradley are currently housed on C block, although it is not suggested that they have contracted the contagious skin condition.

The Star reports that up to five inmates have already been diagnosed as suffering from scabies.

“Five inmates have so far been confirmed as having it and others will be worried that they too will get it as its very contagious,” a source told the Star.

“They don’t want to end up scratching all night in their cells.”

Conditions at Ireland’s maximum security prison have been under the spotlight recently after republican inmates at the jail’s E block began to protest over their dilapidated showering facilities.

The Irish Prison Service is currently investigating after pictures of the facility were smuggled out of the jail.

Scabies is usually passed through skin to skin contact but can also be contracted through the sharing of towels and bedding.
