Teen arrested after gardai seize drug haul in Dublin
Gardai targeting up-and-coming dealers in south Dublin arrested a 16-year-old teenager after seizing almost €10,000 worth of drugs.
Officers from the local drug unit, supported by gardai attached to Sundrive Road garda station, raided a property in Rutland Grove, Crumlin at approximately 8.30pm on Wednesday.
The raid was the result of a surveillance operation, put in place as part of an investigation into drug dealing in the Crumlin area.
After gardai entered the property, they recovered almost €10,000 worth of cannabis.
A 16-year-old male, who was in the house at the time of the raid, was arrested and questioned at Crumlin garda station.
He has since been released while a file is prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
A source said that the raid was part of an ongoing operation to target street dealers in the area, with a further focus on dismantling the operations of younger up-and-coming criminals.
"There is particular concern over younger people having access to such a large value of drugs, and pressure has been increased by local gardai to stamp out their activities in the Crumlin/Drimnagh area," the source said.
It was the latest success for local gardai, who earlier this week seized €2,000 worth of cocaine in the area as part of an ongoing operation.
The local unit also seized over €50,000 worth of cocaine on April 20 after raiding an address in Windmill Park, Crumlin.
No arrests have yet been made in relation to either seizure but investigations are ongoing and further disruptive operations are expected.
A garda spokesman said: "These seizures are part of an ongoing operation targeting the sale and supply of drugs in the local area."
Another operation, involving members of the DMR South Division drug unit saw 1kg of cocaine, worth in the region of approximately €70,000, recovered in the Lucan area in the west of the capital late last month.
The most recent available figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) show that drug dealing offences increased by almost 33 per cent last year compared to 2015 in the Crumlin/Sundrive Road garda district.
In 2016 a total of 263 controlled drug offences were recorded, with 203 such incidents reported the previous year.
However, the figure is still significantly lower than the 393 drug related offences that were recorded in 2013.
