A teacher at a US high school has been arrested after she was accused of having sex with three male students.

Erin McAuliffe (25) was taken into custody in North Carolina on Thursday after police were notified last month about the allegations.

According to WITN she has been charged with three counts of sexual activity with a student and one count of indecent liberties with a minor.

She taught at Rocky Mount Preparatory School which is a public charter school.

Police were notified a month ago by school administrators that a teacher was possibly having sexual encounters with three underage students off campus.

According to reports, numerous students and staff were interviewed by police who then obtained warrants against Ms McAuliffe on Thursday.

The teacher was placed in the Carteret County jail on a $20,000 (€17,864) secured bond and is due to appear in court on Monday.

In a statement Rocky Mount Prep said Ms McAuliffe was fired on May 8.

"We have been fully cooperative with local law enforcement during the course of their handling of this matter," the statement said.

According to her Facebook page Ms McAuliffe studied Mathematics at East Carolina University and Methodist University. She says she is originally from Rocky Mount.
