TD’s thug son back causing havoc after prison release
RESIDENTS of a Laois town previously subjected to campaign of terror from a TD’s violent son, say he is continuing to cause mayhem.
Peter Fleming, son of Laois Fianna Fáil TD Sean Fleming, has been responsible for a litany of crimes.
They include arson, indecency, animal cruelty, assault, criminal damage, theft and burglary, which left residents of Castletown terrified on the streets of the Co Laois town.
On one occasion, gardai were forced to use a Taser gun on him because he violently resisted arrest after going on a drink-driving rampage which a judge described as “one of the very worst of dangerous driving cases” he had ever encountered.
Last year his father said he was hopeful Peter wouldn’t return to a life of crime following his release from prison. Minutes later, Peter threatened to assault a Sunday World reporter.
“If you come round my house again, I’ll knock you the f**k out. You’re like flies round shite. I’ll knock you out. I’ve done my time,” he shouted.
Local shopkeeper Pat Phelan was the victim of numerous crimes carried out by Fleming. The thug repeatedly broke into his shop over a number of months and set his van on fire.
He said Fleming is back causing problems in the area again. A few weeks ago, Fleming was standing outside Mr Phelan’s shop after sending his girlfriend in.
“I said to her to tell him to get away from my door and I’m sorry, but I’m not serving you either. He broke the hurl and threatened me. My window was broken as well.”
Mr Phelan said he has made a statement to gardai over the incident.
In another incident in April, the rented home of a mother and two young children was attacked while they were inside.
Fleming previously lived in the house and locals say he feels he has some kind of claim over it. It is understood the woman is too afraid to press charges in the case.
Mr Phelan added: “He’s out causing big problems again. He’s a menace. We were all hoping he was going to come good, but he’s not going to come good and that’s the truth.”
Fleming has five convictions for indecency and a court was told he has psychosexual behavioural difficulties. In one incident, he received a two-year sentence for exposing himself to a woman before punching her and mugging her.
