The notorious Collopy brothers are recovering after being brutally beaten in Ireland’s maximum security Portlaoise Prison.

Reports indicate that the drug scum brothers were smashed with broom and mop handles during a row on the landing with a number of criminals from the Dublin area.

One of the men who squared up to the Limerick brothers, Dubliner Charles Darcy, was also hospitalised, along with a prison guard.

Sources told the Star that 43-year-old Brian Collopy, of Killonan, Ballysimon, Limerick and his brother Kieran Collopy (40) of St Ita’s Street, St Mary’s Park, Limerick, were seen in conversation with Darcy moments before the row erupted.

“There was a schmoozle and the lads from Dublin and Limerick got involved,” the source told the Star.

“They used broom and mop handles on each other, as well as mugs and even part of a mop bucket.”

A third Collopy brother, Vincent, was also injured in the incident.

All those involved in the fight were discharged from hospital on Sunday night.

The Prison Service has now begun an investigation into the incident.
