Ryan associate carried out assault on addict days before knife attack
An associate of Alan Ryan carried out an attack on a drug addict just days before Vinnie Ryan was slashed in the throat in a murder attempt.
The attack happened in the same part of the north inner-city Dublin where Vinnie, brother of murdered Real IRA gang leader Alan, was seriously injured last Thursday week.
The dissident republican involved in the attack, which happened three days before the attack on Ryan, fled from the scene on a pushbike after assaulting a drug addict.
Gardai are probing whether there is any connection between the two attacks. A north Dublin drug user is suspected of carrying out the attack on Vinnie.
Vinnie (25), who was previously cleared of firearms charges which were linked to the gun murder of drugs trafficker Michael ‘Micka’ Kelly, is not co-operating with Gardaí in relation to the attack on him. It occurred in Parnell Square near the Rotunda Hospital, where his pregnant girlfriend had an appointment.
There has been a constant threat to his life from the north Dublin drugs gang run by the criminal known as ‘Mr Big’ for some time.
Meanwhile, associates of Ryan have denied they have had any fallout with other republicans.
A statement released in the wake of the attack on Ryan claimed the streets would run red with the blood of the criminals feuding with dissident republicans.
The statement purported to come from the newly reformed Real IRA, which had broken away from the so-called New IRA.
The statement added that members of the New IRA were providing information to the north Dublin gang led by Mr Big on former associates of Ryan.
However, Ryan’s pal Derek Nolan called the statement “a joke”.
“To be blaming republicans for an attack on a well-known republican can only be devicive (sic) and an attempt to cause friction.
“To talk of attacks, revenge and rivers of blood is madness and ill informed and an uneducated reaction from people with a gang mentality.”
