Armed raiders held up a cash in transit van and escaped with a large sum of money after using an angle grinder to open a cash box.

The incident unfolded at approximately 11.45am today in Bayside, North Dublin.

The security van was at Bayside shopping centre when two raiders, carrying a suspected firearm, demanded staff hand over a cash box.

A source told that the raiders then used an angle grinder at the scene to open the box. They fled with a sum of cash, believed to be around €36,000, leaving the empty box at the scene.

They drove in the direction of Bayside Dart station where they left the vehicle and fled on foot.

A black Opel Vectra was recovered a short time later near Bayside train station. A firearm was discovered in the back seat of the vehicle.

This will now be sent for ballistics tests.

Nobody was injured in the incident. One of the men was wearing a balaclava and the second had covered his face with a scarf.

A Garda spokeswoman confirmed that Gardaí in Sutton are investigating the incident.
