A prison officer was slashed with a homemade knife after coming to the rescue of an inmate at an Irish jail on Friday.

The brave officer came between a criminal carrying a shiv and his intended target during an altercation at Portlaoise maximum security prison.

The attack took place shortly after 7pm on the C2 landing at the jail.

The officer was slashed across the hands and lower arms while intervening in the attack.

He is currently in hospital in Portlaoise receiving treatment.

Sources said the prisoner's life "was saved by the quick and brave actions of the officer".

A source added that the attacker targeted his fellow inmate after accusing him of an attack on a disabled family member.
