Police are hunting a gang who attacked a woman with baseball bats and a knife while she was giving birth.

The 22-year-old victim, who has not been named, was about to go to hospital when the masked men burst into her home in Basildon, Essex.

She suffered a fractured skull and other injuries - but gave birth to a healthy baby after being taken to the town's hospital.

An Essex Police spokeswoman said officers were called to the house in Beambridge at about 9pm on Monday.

She said: "Five men smashed their way into the premises, armed with crowbars, and assaulted the male and female occupants before leaving the scene on foot.

"The pair sustained minor injuries."

The men are described as aged in their early to mid-20s. One was black and the others were white.

Witnesses should contact Essex Police on 101.

A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: "We heard the news this morning and it's a horrible thing to happen to anybody.

"There have been other stories about people being targeted in their homes and you worry the neighbourhood might get a bad name."

The woman's partner told the Basildon Echo: "My partner's contractions were about six minutes apart, so I went upstairs to get her hospital bag and to phone the babysitter to come and look after our two-year-old.

"The next thing I heard a loud smash - like a fishtank shattering.

"My partner started screaming my name and I just heard these men shouting something like, 'where's the money? Give us the money'."

The gang made off with electrical goods including an iPad and a small amount of cash.
