Mourners at the funeral of Vinnie Ryan today were told of a "witty, intelligent man, who loved to play pranks."

Father Gerry Corcoran, parish priest at the Church of the Holy Trinity, Donaghmede, Dublin 13, told the hundreds of mourners the father-of-one was a "loving son, partner, father, brother, uncle, cousin and friend."

During the mass, Father Gerry Corcoran said the birth of Ryan’s six-week-old-daughter was an "unreal" sense of joy to him.

"He loved his partner Kelly and the birth of their baby daughter Phoenix just six weeks ago brought great joy and new life to him," Fr Corcoran stated.

"His excitement at her birth was described to me as 'unreal'."

Vinnie Ryan died last week when he was shot dead while sitting in his car on McKee Road in Finglas.

Ryan's funeral was taking place in the same church as that of his brother, Alan Ryan, who was shot dead four years.

Today mourners were told that Vinnie Ryan was a man who valued "friendship greatly".

"Vincent was a good handyman who could “put his hand to anything”, having also served his time as an apprentice plumber. He played guitar and enjoyed music."

Mourners were also heard Ryan was a teetotaller who never touched drink or drugs.

"He was a non-smoker, non-drinker and never used drugs. He enjoyed watching TV, especially the Discovery channel."

Funeral-goers were also told of Ryan's love of cycling: "Vincent enjoyed cycling from a young age and more recently his love of his motorbiking emerged."

Father Corcoran told mourners that when a "young person dies suddenly and violently as Vincent has, it is a stark reminder that we should never take life for granted.

"Tomorrow is not promised, which is why we must live each day to its fullest and embrace it a gift from God and so strive, to live out our daily lives as Christians in preparation for that unknown moment when our earthly journey will be over."

After the service, Mr Ryan is to be buried at Fingal Cemetery in north Dublin.

This morning, gardai conducted a security sweep of the cemetery where murder victim Vinnie Ryan is to be buried this morning.

Gardai are expected to maintain a highly visible presence at the funeral and burial of the former Republican today, who will be buried alongside his brother, Alan at Fingal Cemetery this morning.

Armed gardai were also visible at the cemetery.
