Pensioners tied to chairs and beaten by raiders

Three masked thugs broke in the home of an elderly couple in Donaghbrook Drive, Ballymoney, Co Antrim at approximately 9:40pm last night.

Three masked men tied the couple to chairs with cable ties before striking the man, aged in his 70s, in the head.

The injured man was taken to hospital for treatment, but has since been released.

The assailants fled in an unknown vehicle with a substantial sum of money.

PSNI officers are also investigating reports that gunshots were heard in the area.

Detective Constable Brennan said: “The woman managed to break free and go to a neighbour’s house.

“There were also reports of shots fired coming from the Ballybrakes area at around this time and I am appealing to anyone who may have heard a sound like shots to contact us.”

PSNI are appealing to anyone that may have witnessed any suspicious activity or vehicles in the area to contact them at Coleraine Police Station on the 101 number.
