Murder investigation launched following 'horrendous' death of woman
A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a woman this morning, authorities have said.
Gardai said they have upgraded the investigation into the death in Sligo earlier today.
Detectives have arrested a 33-year-old man in connection with the incident. He is being detained at Sligo Garda station under the provisions of section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984, as amended.
Officers received a call at approximately 10.30am and went to the scene at Mailcoach Road in the town.
On arrival ambulance crew were at the scene and gardai encountered a man (33), originally from Roscommon, carrying a knife. The man was tasered by members of the Regional Support Unit on arrival.
Medical attention was provided to the young woman at the scene by emergency services. She was rushed to Sligo Regional Hospital but passed away a short time later.
The victim has been named locally as 23-year-old Natalie McGuinness who was from Easky and was living and working in Sligo town.
Gardai said a post-mortem examination is "ongoing" this evening.
The 33-year-old man was also brought to hospital for treatment.
Locals in Sligo have expressed shock at the violent death of a young woman in the city.
Fine Gael TD John Perry said people were stunned by the news this evening.
"This is a horrendous loss of life and I want to express my sympathy and the sympathies of the local community to this young woman's family.
"This is the third such tragedy to hit Sligo and people are just stunned by another death in such tragic circumstances," he added.
