A man has been arrested in connection with an attack on a mother who is being treated in hospital for stab wounds.

The victim, who is in her 40s and from Cork, has been named locally as Donna Foster.

Ms Foster was seriously injured during a knife attack at a house in the Cooline area of Cobh yesterday morning. A 16-year-old girl was also injured in the incident.

It is believed the attack developed at a property yesterday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene between 10 and 11am where they discovered Ms Foster. She had received serious injuries and was rushed to Cork University Hospital along with the teenage girl, who is reportedly her daughter.

She remained there last night and her condition was described as being serious but stable. She received multiple stab wounds to her neck, abdomen and hands.

The young girl was treated for her injuries and was released last night. She was able to remove the knife from the man before alerting authorities.

A man aged in his 50s, who is known to the woman and her daughter, was involved in the violent incident. He has been detained by Gardai, a spokesperson said, and he remains in custody at Cobh Garda Station.

Ms Foster is known as a successful businesswoman and is a popular beautician in the coastal town.

"Donna is fabulous, an absolutely gorgeous girl," one local woman said last night. "I know the family well, I know her mum's family."

"Donna is very elegant.

"I am so shocked, Donna comes from the most beautiful and respectful family in the town," the woman said.

"Her family are pillars of the community in every way, shape and form.

"They are a very community-orientated family," she added.
