More body parts found in Wicklow by garda divers and army

More human remains have been discovered by Gardai and the Defence Forces following searches carried out in Wicklow today

Additional remains were recovered by the Garda Water Unit at Glenmacanass waterfall near to the site of yesterday’s discovery, and by Defence Forces personnel at Lough Brea Lower on Military Road.

Both scenes are preserved for forensic examination.

Gardai are scouring the missing person register for clues as to the identity of the individual whose body parts were found Wicklow over the past three days.

Reports indicate that gardai now believe that the victim is male and aged in his mid-20s and that security sources believe that it is likely that the murder took place recently.

The torso was discovered in bushes on the road by a group of people returning from a picnic at around 7.45pm on Saturday.

The second body part was found approximately 15km from the first, after gardaí cordoned off the road from Enniskerry to Glencree, the road south from Glencree to Sally Gap, and the road further south from Sally Gap to Laragh, in order to carry out searches

Superintendent Pat Ward, of Bray garda station, said officers were satisfied the victim died a violent death.

"A local doctor attended the scene. He confirmed, in fact, that the remains were that of a human being," he said.

"At this point, the Technical Bureau has completed its examination of the scene.

"The body was removed for a short period to the Mater Hospital for X-ray and post-mortem... at the city morgue in Whitehall."

Supt Ward said gardaí wouldn't have any further information about the victim until the post-mortem was completed.

"We believe that the person who died came to their death by sinister means.

"It's similar to a murder investigation, the type of investigation we are undertaking is comparable to a murder investigation. We're putting as much resources and effort into it."

Supt Ward said the investigation would be led by the results from the post-mortem.

Investigating Gardaí are continuing to appeal to members of the public who were in the general area of Military Road / Laragh Co. Wicklow in the recent days and who may have seen anything suspicious or unusual to contact the incident room at Bray Garda Station on 01-666 5300, the Garda Confidential Line 1-800-666-111 or any Garda Station.
