Gardai are searching for a man who was one of three who attacked three members of the force at an incident in Leitrim last night

Independent.ie report that the incident took place in Mahanagh, Drumshanbo in the county last night.

Gardai were following up an incident earlier this month when a car failed to stop for them. When they spotted the vehicle again they pulled it over but the driver of the car attacked the gardai when he was asked to verify details of the vehicle.

Gardai responded with pepper spray and then two other men in the company of the driver became involved in the incident which was described by a source as a 'free for all'.

The three men are said to have attacked the gardai with sticks, stones and glass bottles while a dog is also reported to have been set on the officers.

After reinforcements arrived one man was arrested at the scene and after the air support unit was called a second man who fled was found an hour later roughly seven kilometres from the scene.

Both these men were detained in Manorhamilton garda station and they are due before a special sitting of the district court today.

However the third man involved in the incident escaped after using the car to flee.

He is still at large and anyone with information is asked to contact officers at Carrick on Shannon garda station, on 0719650510.
