Man tangled in rope attached to sinking, capsized boat rescued
A man was rescued off the Irish coast after getting into serious difficulty after his boat capsized.
Locals alerted Malin Head Coast Guard after a person was seen in the water by the boat off Co Donegal.
The incident occurred east of Innishinny Island shortly before 5pm yesterday evening.
Lifeboats from Bunbeg station and Aranmore station arrived at the scene shortly afterwards.
Rescue efforts were hampered, however, because of adverse weather conditions and breaking surf.
The man was wearing a lifeboat which was keeping him afloat in the choppy waters.
Sligo Coast Guard's helicopter was then elisted, which arrived on scene and lowered winchman Gary Robertson to the sinking boat.
The man was attached to his boat with rope wrapped four times - and was sinking with the boat at this time.
Winchman Robertson had to cut the sinking man loose with his knife in a last minute effort to save him.
The man was then extracted at approximately 5.30pm.
The Rescue 118 helicopter then rushed to Letterkenny hospital with the patient who was in critical condition.
